The DTI has introduced amendments requiring companies to allocate 2.5% of their annual payroll towards funding higher education bursaries for black students. This initiative can earn companies up to four points on their B-BBEE scorecard and includes provisions for funding adult basic education and school training programmes.
Bursaries hold great potential for unlocking opportunities for South Africa's youth. MYSTAR believes they can play a crucial role in transforming unemployment rates, workplace diversity, income inequality, and ultimately, the economy.
Transformation and B-BBEE efforts in both the public and private sectors must align with the imperative of providing quality education to as many young South Africans as possible.
