It is well known that South Africa has a critical shortage of engineers, accountants and scientists. Many learners, although keen to embark on a career in one of these fields, fail to do so because they choose not to take pure mathematics as a matric subject, believing that they do not have the skills to successfully pass the subject at the end of grade 12.
The Star Schools Grade 9 Maths programme aims to enhance learner confidence in the subject by offering extra tuition to grade 9 learners hoping to improve their mathematics results, thus convincing them to choose mathematics as a subject for the FET phase.
Learners are exposed to high-quality educational materials and instruction in the subject. The programme also touches on the basics of the grade 10 mathematics curriculum.
The syllabus covered is that used by the Department of Education and is aligned to the national CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) document.
Learners are required to attend five sessions of four hours each. The classes are conducted each term, just before learners finalise their course selection for grade 10.
All classes take place on Saturdays and consist of a mix of syllabus revision and pre-exam preparation sessions.
Special attention is paid to problematic areas of the syllabus with which learners are known to struggle. These include:
- Algebraic expressions
- Data handling
An assessment is written at the end of each session.
